Khaliq and Maimouna go together real bad. Since thirteen, it’s been them against the world—bound by books, music, and a love that feels written in the stars. Maimouna , the bold and unapologetic daughter of a wealthy family, is a fashion designer and community organizer with her eyes set on revolution. Khaliq an orphan raised by his Aunt and Uncle is a thoughtful writer and fearless organizer, using his words and his community work to fight for freedom.

In New Hope, a city built by Black visionaries, They vowed that nothing would ever break their bond. But some forces move in silence, testing even the strongest love. In this novelette—a prequel to the upcoming novel Lay The Dust—love, faith, and ambition are thrown into the unknown. Can their bond hold under the weight of the future? Or will the world they’re fighting for tear them apart?

F.H. Salahud-Din laid a wonderful and powerful foundation for Khaliq & Maimouna’s story. Just within these pages, you can see how life & death are truly in the power of the tongue and the great lengths people will go to stop your divine destiny. Like, I’m excited for Lay the Dust, I’m invested to see how it all comes together. F.H. is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She writes for and about black people with so much reverence, diligence and care.
